The video below is a sensible insight into how interactive screens can be incorporated into everyday life to enhance our own lives, facilitate greater levels of communication and build relationships.

The great thing about the video, is that it’s not revolutionary and radical, it’s realistic…and quite fascinating. Click play….and don’t drool too much.

I recent came across this interactive campaign by Nokia, aimed at the Nokia business crowd.

The campaign is delivered via a well crafted interactive online application, built entirely in Flash. The way that this campaign engages its users, is by prompting the user to upload their least favourite documents (pdfs, powerpoint files, word documents….whatever they might be), which are then joyously vandalised and disposed of right before your very eyes. Think of it like the Windows Recycle Bin with an anarchistic and visual twist!

Rather than describe the experience from end to end, I recommend that you click on the link below and experience it for yourself. After all, appropriately disposing of a hated document should be a satisfying experience.

Have you wondering how the heck you can create a viral campaign using that funny little webcam that comes as standard issue on the top of the monitor of most new notebook PCs?

Sure, we’ve seen a few campaigns in the past that have used webcams to do simple things – like insert the user’s face on a cartoon body, or something to that effect.

But technology has come forward in leaps and bounds since then, and Paper Motion of Australia has recently released a fantastic new piece of software that uses your PC’s webcam to create a fully interactive user experience – creating virtual characters, virtual objects, and movement in 3D.

It’s breathtaking, addictive, and will be the next big novelty item in interactive online marketing. Check out a few demos of the software in action below…..

And another, used for Earth Hour, here…

If you’re interested to see how some existing websites have already used this technology, it is also worth checking out the following websites:

People hate words. If I could write this blog with pictures instead of text, I would.

Unfortunately, this is not yet a feasible approach for online design, as Google loves words. Words allow Google to do what it does best – index information. So at the moment we are being pulled in two separate directions when creating appealing interactive website designs that also rank well in search engines….perhaps one day this will change (are you reading this Mr Google?).

When it comes to considering the best practices for the design of interactive web applications, the ongoing challenge, is to create something that feels tangible and alive when you interact with it, despite the fact that the end user will be staring at a flat, 2 dimensional monitor. Just to make matters more challenging, the design must also appeal to Google.

This Web Trends Map, below, manages to achieve the balance.

This Map of 2009 Web Trends shows a great ability to create a ‘tangible’, interactive experience despite displaying a completely intangible set of data related to website usage.

* * * *

Here’s a brief explanation of the concept, from the creators of this eloquent interactive design:

The Web Trend Map is a yearly publication by iA Inc. It maps the 333 most influential Web domains and the 111 most influential internet people onto the Tokyo Metro map. Domains are carefully selected by the iA research team through dialogue with map enthusiasts. Each domain is evaluated based on traffic, revenue, age and the company that owns it. The iA design team assigns these selected domains to individual stations on the Tokyo Metro map in ways that complement the characters of each.

* * * *

For those of you out there who are trying to represent intangible items, such as company finacial data, or internal web usage trends, to an audience who generally cannot conceptualise anything more than a map of their local street, perhaps you could explore this concept further….of mapping intangible data against an existing familiar and tangible interactive application.

You can interact with the Map here:

Finally, a significant innovation in outdoor advertising that could also benefit local communities. Interactive e-billboards have been scattered around cities, allowing people to experience the rush of creating their own e-graffiti without the mess and destruction of the more ‘traditional’ forms of graffiti.

Interactive outdoor advertising in a bus shelter

Across the world bus shelters and phone booths have been adorned with these e-graffiti billboards, however the manufacturer is still yet to be identified (it was rumoured that Sharpie – a reknowned manufacturer of Sharpie pens were behind this but this rumour has since been silenced by a Sharpie spokeperson). Nevertheless, if the image an e-graffiti billboard portrays aligns with your company’s branding or campaigns, I’m sure with a little research you will be able to source a manufacturer of this innovative outdoor marketing medium.
